An optical maintenance diagnostic prototype. Launches narrow nanosecond laser pulses down a single-mode optical fiber; high-speed avalanche photodiodes measure the minute Rayleigh backscattered light and Fresnel reflections, accurately pinpointing cable cuts and fusion splice losses.
